What is Bone Broth?

Bone broth is a soup broth that is made from animal bones and connective tissues.

Traditionally it’s made with cow or chicken bones, but can also be made with pig bones or fish.

We know, at first it might sound unappetizing. But don’t forget...many delicious soups, such as ham and bean soup or chicken soup, get their flavor from boiling bones.

In fact, some of the best flavors are found within animal bones, which is why many upscale restaurants make stock from scratch.

How Bone Broth is Made

The process of making bone broth is actually pretty simple…

The process begins with boiling animal bones of your choosing in a stock pot.

To add flavor, place your favorite herbs, vegetables, or spices in the pot and simmer for an hour or so until you’ve achieved the flavor you desire.

While the actual process of making bone broth isn’t super hard, it does take time and effort to ensure that your recipe turns out ok.

The good news is that if you’re not big into making soup stocks yourself, you can find bone broth in most health food stores. Just be careful that you’re selecting a high-quality bone broth as not all broths are made the same!

Bone broth is a fantastic source of natural collagen-- a protein found in the bones and ligaments of animals.

As bone broth simmers, this natural collagen is absorbed, which then is naturally absorbed into our bodies when we consume it.

Ingesting collagen is essential for joint health as the gelatin-like substance is used inside the broth to cushion bones and help our bones glide together without too much friction.
